kaip.tik.ten  del.icio.us phantom survivals, part I

Dabar, visi trys brangūs skaitytojai, turėkit galvoje, kad postas bus entirely angliškas. Čia yra istorija, kuri, ko gero, dabar jau yra dead ir dėl to talking point is too good not to be shared.

Bus papunkčiui komentuojamas jų proposal raštas, actual excerpts marked in blue italics. And here goes.

"Phantom survivals" project seems to have multiple layers of perceived and actual problems. Now, I apologize in advance if we got all this completely wrong, but this is what we understood from project proposal.

First and foremost, here goes philosophical ideological layer. And I am mentioning it only because of historical and social and what-not changes as a term being present in project proposal. If such an attempt at highbrow analysis would have been omitted, this layer would not exist at all. But there you have it.
Short summary: you have to be fucking kidding me.

You are taking period of, essentially, war, occupation, suppression, which lasted for fifty years, and effectively tried to destroy any uniqueness in any part of life in any country under the regime, and trying to make it look as a definitive period for Lithuanian architecture (quote: „The exhibition will offer the genuine discovery of a country through buildings and city planning projects presenting the Lithuanian architecture as specific and authentic phenomena.").

Architecture, being an applied art and, unlike many other art forms, acutely depending on state of the economy and government, doesn‘t exist in some sort of political vacuum - you have to recognize that point - and what you see in state mandated architecture of that period, is acute reflection of all the horrors, atrocities and plain ugliness, executed in this regime. As, for example, skyscrapers of Hong Kong reflect booming economy of important part of empire, so does most of your hailed soviet architecture reflect masses of dead inteligentsia in Syberia. Exceptions exist, of course, but they are rare. This whole idea resembles artfully making erotic photosessions in concentration camps. It is still concentration camp, you guys, no matter how nice boobs are. You think Germany would like their architecture to be defined by Third Reich period?

Explanation in detail below. This is not in chronological order of proposal points, but rather in order of addressing problem layers.

Project aims to take visitors of the exhibition on a trip to Lithuania through the images of its
modernist architecture, images that reflect social and physical changes Lithuania indicted by Soviet occupation between 1944 and 1990 and the Independence since 1990.

Alright, so far so good.

‘Disappearance' is devoted to the irreplaceable artefacts, which were either demolished or altered. Phantom heritage which threatened survival provided incentive for social awareness.

Irreplaceable modernist artefacts from the same Soviet era? Or you mean buildings, which were exterminated during this era? If this is the case, you might have some point, but I can not gather it from this sentence.

And last sentence doesn‘t make any sense at all, frankly. Do you mean that phantom, destroyed, heritage from before Soviet regime incited some good stuff? But if so, your examples are definitely contradicting it, them being Soviet regime examples, most of them mandated by the state and most of them build by the state, designed by state appointed architects?

What social awareness? How can you credibly claim that this particular architecture had some incentive in social awareness? Have you made sociological research on this matter with sample group of people who actually lived through the time and were in touch with processes occurring at the time, and understood them consciously, being able to analyze factors of that arising awareness? Awareness for what? Independence? The meaning is muddled beyond all recognition.
